How to Find x and y Values of a Function
You will often be asked to find the -value when you are given a -value, or find the -value when you are given an -value. To find -values and -values, follow these two steps:
Rule
Example 1
You have the function . Find the -value when , and the -value when .
To find when :
Therefore, when .
To find when :
Note! To figure out where intersects the axes, this is the procedure:
- 1.
- To find where intersects the -axis, you insert 0 for . So you calculate , and the answer is the point of intersection between the graph and the -axis, .
- 2.
- To find where intersects the -axis, you set . Solve the equation for , and the answer is the point of intersection between the graph and the -axis. These points are also called zeros of the function.
