How do you find how many times greater one values is compared to another?
Imagine you have a ratio that compares two things, like 2:8. This ratio means that for every 2 of something, there are 8 of something else. Like here, for every 2 oranges there are 8 plums:
To find out how many times one value is as large as another, just divide the bigger number by the smaller number. Here’s how you do it:
- Look at your numbers: In the ratio 2:8, 8 is the bigger number, and 2 is the smaller number.
- Divide the big number by the small one: You take 8 and divide it by 2.
- Do the math: 8 divided by 2 is 4.
So, 8 is 4 times as big as 2. This means if you have 2 oranges, then you have 4 times as many plums, which would be 8 plums. It’s like saying, "For every 2 oranges, there are 8 plums, and that's 4 times more."
That’s how you figure out how many times one value is as big as another when you have their ratio.
