The traffic cone as we know it today was invented in the 1940s by Charles D. Scanlon. Scanlon worked as a painter for the Street Painting Department of the City of Los Angeles. Before this, metal or wooden signs or barriers were used instead. These earlier signs, not only hard to spot, often posed a risk of damaging vehicles.
