How do you derive the formulas for finding the volume of cylinders?

To find the volume of a cylinder, you need to know two things: the area of the bottom (base) and how tall it is.

  1. Calculating the area of the base: You find this by using the formula for the area of a circle, which is , where is the radius.
  2. Measure the height: The height is how tall it is. This is simply the distance from the bottom to the top.
  3. Multiply: Once you know the area of the base and the height, you find the volume by multiplying these two numbers together. So, the volume of the cylinder is the area of the base times the height, written as:

where is the height of the cylinder.

And that’s it! You multiply the area of the base by the height to get the volume, which tells you how much space there is inside the cylinder.
