A prism has flat surfaces. The faces of a prism include two identical bases and several rectangular side faces.

Bases:

A prism has two identical faces called the "bases." The bases are parallel and have the same shape and size. Parallel means they are lined up exactly above and below each other.

Side faces:

The other faces of a prism are rectangles. These faces connect the edges of the two parallel bases. The number of sides faces correspond to the number of sides on the base.

- If the base is a triangle, there are three side faces.

- If the base is a square, there are four side faces.

- If the base is a rectangle, there are also four side faces.

- If the base is a pentagon (plane figure with 5 edges), there are five side faces.

Named after base shape:

Prisms are named based on the shape of their bases.

- If the bases are triangles: it's a triangular prism.

- If the bases are squares, it’s a square prism.

- If the bases are rectangles, it’s a rectangular prism.

- If both the bases and side faces are equal, it’s a cube.
